Faculty of Geography
The Faculty of Geography leverages the globally leading disciplinary strengths in geography at Lomonosov Moscow State University, focusing on comprehensive physical geography research while intensifying studies on the coupling between natural geographical processes and socioeconomic processes/human well-being, as well as integrated natural resource management.
The Faculty initiated its master's program in "Urban Ecology and Regional Planning" in 2020, commenced doctoral studies in "Earth Sciences" in 2024, and will launch its undergraduate program in "Physical Geography and Resource Environments" in 2025.
The curriculum emphasizes cultivating students' understanding of spatial structures and physical/chemical/biological processes of Earth's surface systems, mastery of fundamental theories and knowledge, and competencies in integrating theory with practice, quantitative analysis, and information processing. It simultaneously highlights applied geographical synthesis and interdisciplinary approaches to facilitate major Sino-Russian strategic initiatives in resources and environments, along with the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Through specialized training, graduates will acquire foundational theories and analytical methodologies in physical geography and resource environment management, develop field investigation techniques, remote sensing interpretation, and laboratory operational skills for primary scientific data collection, and obtain professional qualifications for careers in research/educational institutions, government agencies, and enterprises involving environmental change studies, resource management, and conservation.
The Faculty currently comprises 20 full-time faculty members predominantly from Moscow State University's Geography Department, including 2 academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 7 professors, and 9 associate professors, with all 20 holding doctoral degrees. This constitutes a dedicated, pedagogically experienced, and high-caliber teaching team that has laid a solid foundation for disciplinary advancement.
