This year, nearly 50,000 participants in Guangdong Province took part in the online testing stage of the “Reciting China” Classic Reading Competition, the highest number in the country. A total of 1,080 entries were submitted across seven categories: primary school, middle school, vocational school, university, international students, teachers, and social participants. After a rigorous selection process, 60 works advanced to the final round. After several rigorous rounds of review, 60 outstanding works advanced to the finals of the competition. Among them, SMBU student Petr Burdyganov distinguished himself in the International Student Group with his solo recitation of Li Bai’s masterpiece “Song of a Dream Visit to Tianmu: Farewell to Those I Leave Behind” (Meng You Tianmu Yin Liubie), earning a top score and securing a place in the Guangdong provincial finals.
The provincial finals were held on July 7 at the library of Guangdong Polytechnic of Light Industry’s Nanhai Campus. The competition adopted a live recitation format, with performances evaluated by an expert judging panel organized by the hosts. Continuing under the theme “Illuminating the Classics, Carrying Forward the Cultural Legacy”, the event aimed to spread the power of the classics, pass on cultural heritage, and showcase the vitality of traditional Chinese culture across Guangdong.

On stage, dressed in traditional Tang-style attire, Petr delivered a heartfelt and fluent Chinese recitation of Li Bai’s celebrated poem. His performance transported the audience into the poet’s dreamlike vision, while also conveying the great spirit of Li Bai’s yearning for freedom and refusal to conform. His exceptional delivery earned high praise from the judges. This marked Petr’s first time representing SMBU in the competition, and his success in reaching the provincial finals highlighted not only his impressive command of Chinese but also his deep understanding of classical poetry. His achievement reflects the high quality of instruction in the university’s Chinese Language program.
