As the university-level qualifying round for the 2025 “FLTRP·ETIC Cup” National English Speaking Competition for College Students, the contest attracted 107 enthusiastic participants, including both undergraduate and postgraduate students from across all faculties. Following a highly competitive preliminary round, 30 contestants advanced to the university finals. This year’s final was themed “Strike the Waves,” echoing the competition’s guiding principle of “Understanding China, Communicating with the World.” Using English as a bridge, the contestants connected personal reflections with national development, vividly demonstrating the spirit of a new generation of Chinese youth—courageous, innovative, and ready to forge ahead in an era of change. The event was filled with passion and eloquence, as participants impressed the judges and audience with their performances. In the end, three contestants won Gold Awards, five received Silver Awards, and eight earned Bronze Awards.

In her opening remarks, Professor Jiang Lirong, Head of the English Language Center, noted that the “FLTRP·ETIC Cup,” established in 2002, has become a highly influential platform in China’s foreign language education field. She expressed her hope that students would use this opportunity to refine their public speaking skills and enhance their cross-cultural communication competence. Professor Jiang emphasized that “striking the waves” is more than a slogan—it is a call to action. She encouraged the contestants to treat the stage as the open sea and their speeches as the oars that drive them forward, urging them to share their voices boldly and demonstrate their courage. She concluded by inspiring the students to carry this spirit into their future journeys: even when the path ahead is uncertain or challenging, they should face it with curiosity, embrace the unknown, and strive for excellence.

During the competition, Wang Yining from the Faculty of Economics, along with He Zhuoyu and Tang Huaiyuan from the Faculty of Biology, delivered outstanding speeches distinguished by their compelling content and eloquent expression. Their performances vividly embodied the spirit of dedication and responsibility that defines the youth of the new era, conveying a steadfast belief in the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and a strong sense of mission to contribute to the world. In recognition of their exceptional performances, all three contestants were awarded the Gold Prize.
After the competition, Associate Professor Su Heng from the English Language Center delivered the closing remarks. He highly praised the contestants for their remarkable performances, commending their fluent language skills, confident stage presence, and ability to seamlessly connect the competition theme with their personal aspirations and the nation’s future. He emphasized that this contest was not the end, but the beginning—a starting point for stepping onto the international stage. Professor Su encouraged the students to carry this confidence forward, to brave the waves of life, and to pursue their dreams with courage and determination.

Mao Yufeng, Director of the International Academic Exchange and Cooperation Office, and Wang Manli, Deputy Director of the Academic Affairs Department, attended the event. A panel of seven Chinese and Russian faculty members from the English Language Center and the Faculty of Philology served as the professional judging committee. As one of the highlight events of the Fourth Knowledge, Science and Culture Festival of Shenzhen MSU-BIT University, the competition not only provided an inspiring platform for outstanding students to showcase their talents, but also helped identify and prepare exceptional candidates for the upcoming provincial-level competition in November.

“Dreams may seem distant, but perseverance makes them attainable; aspirations may be challenging, but persistence makes them real.” May more young students ride the waves of their times, forge ahead with courage, and use language as their wings to share with the world the wisdom, vitality, and spirit of China’s youth.
