Recently, the winner list of the 18th “Challenge Cup” Guangdong College Students Extracurricular Academic Technical Works Competition was published. MSU-BIT University won four Third Prizes in the competition, registering a historical breakthrough.
As a top-level competition of Chinese College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the “Challenge Cup” is usually known as “Young Innovation Olympics”, which is one of the domestic college student extracurricular academic competitions with the highest specification, the largest scale and the biggest influence. This competition titled “New Journey of the Youth, Scientific Innovation for the Future” attracted the participation of tens of thousands of works from more than 190 colleges and universities in the province, covering the three major categories including natural science academic paper, social survey report of philosophy and social science, and academic paper and scientific and technological invention production. The competition was fierce unprecedentedly.
Award-winning works I

Name: A DeepONet-NTK Combination Framework for Solving Inverse Problem
Team members: Fang Yuhao
Tutors: Li Chun
Category: Academic paper of natural science
Brief introduction: This project innovatively proposes a DeepONet-NTK combination framework for the core problem—inverse problem in the scientific and engineering calculation. The framework combines the operator learning advantages of DeepONet with the NTK potentials in improving training dynamics and astringency, with the purpose to solve the complex inverse problem efficiency and correctly. Through the Navier-Stokes equation solving and image reconstruction tests, the project has verified the effectiveness, robustness and rapid convergence of the framework.
Team statement: I am honored to win the award in the “Challenge Cup” competition. The honor shows not only the recognition of my efforts but also the efforts and supports of my tutor. From the initial inspiration to the final framework, I was ever worried about code error and data deviation but I way also happy for breaking through bottleneck. During the preparation, it was full of challenges for each link from topic selection to model verification. Although the works still have deficiency, the experience has become an important step in our growth. The road ahead will be long. I believe that I will be encouraged and pushed by the award to go further in the future.
Award-winning works II

Name: Shuttling in Security “Gap”: Social Security Problems and Solutions of Take-away and Online Car-hailing Practitioners
Team members: Zhao Xichen, Lu Qinling
Tutors: Guo Zhenglin, Yuan Xiaojiang, Yu Fengju, Dong Yitong, Zhao Feilong
Category: Social survey report of philosophy and social science
Brief introduction: The project focuses on the social security problem of the take-away and online car-hailing practitioners under the new employment form. By thorough investigation, the team analyzes the difficulties of the current practitioners, including low social security coverage, insufficient social security level and labor relation identification difficulty. The project innovatively proposes the “Three-element Game Model” and the “social security vulnerability index” for quantitative analysis and designs the “Honeycomb Security System” based on block chain technology and the dynamic pricing model with the purpose to provide reference for improving the labor rights protection system under the new employment form.
Team statement: we are honored that our project--Shuttling in Security “Gap”: Social Security Problems and Solutions of Take-away and Online Car-hailing Practitioners can gain recognition. The award shows not only the affirmation on our efforts but also the serious concerns of the labor rights protection under the new employment form from all sectors of society. Each progress of the project is inseparable from tutors’ careful guidance, members’ cooperation and true feedback of the front-line laborers. In the future, we hope that the research results can provide reference for policy optimization and help these practitioners to solve the “social security problem” and enjoy more equitable and dignified right protection. This honor is a starting point but an end point. We will continue to convey warmth through action and make our modest means for social inclusion and progress.
Award-winning works III

Name: IRIS Intelligent Blind Guiding Robot
Team members: Jiang Yuqun, Chen Weiming, Wen Weicheng, Tong Boyi, Han Kexin, Chen Tianyuan, Zhang Zhihui, Xu Xianghao, Ye Shiyaxuan, Xu Qianhao
Tutors: Hu Xiping, Zheng Jianbo, Yang Fan
Category: Scientific and technological invention production
Brief introduction: The IRIS Intelligent Blind Guiding Robot project aims at providing one safe, reliable and intelligent trip assistance tool for the people with visual impairment. The robot integrates high-accuracy sensor, SLAM technology, natural language processing and LQR control algorithm to realize high-stability autonomous navigation, accurate environmental perception and obstacle avoidance, and user affective interaction. The project is committed to technologically help the people with visual impairment to integrate into society in a more confident manner.
Team statement: we are honored that the IRIS Intelligent Blind Guiding Robot can win the provincial Third Prize. The result is originated from our original intention—we hope to provide the more independent trip experience for the people with visual impairment by using the intelligent interaction and visual impairment technology. We thank for the specialized guidance from tutors Hu Xiping, Zheng Jianbo and Yang Fan and the recognition of the organizing committee. In the past half a year, we experienced numerous failures and iterations from sensor debugging to scenario test. However, each algorithm optimization and each detail adjustment were sourced from our most simple wish—Let technology become a power to improve life. This award affirms our original intention and also drives us to move on. In the future, we will continue to optimize the IRIS practicability and let innovation serve the people really. The honor belongs to each team member who ever made contributions to the project.
Award-winning works IV

Name: Building Apparent Structure Defect Intelligent Machine Inspection Scheme
Team members: Xiong Xudong, Liu Xiaoya, Hu Minghang, Liu Zhennan, Sun Feiyang, Gao Qi, Gao Xitong
Tutors: Yi Shenghui, Cheng Junye, Cai Wanqing
Category: Scientific and technological invention production
Brief introduction: Because the traditional building apparent structure defect inspection methods are featured by low efficiency, high cost and high risk, this project develops one set of intelligent inspection scheme based on intelligent wall-climbing robot and AI visual recognition technology. The scheme can first capture the building surface image by the wall-climbing robot with high-definition camera and then conduct the high-precision and automatic identification and quantitative analysis of six common defects including crack, peeling and rust by using the deep learning algorithm. The project aims to provide the efficient and safe solutions for the safety assessment of old buildings and infrastructures.
Team statement: Our team is joyful and grateful to win the Third Prize of the Challenge Cup in Guangdong Province. This honor is the best reward for our hundreds of days of persistent exploration. From being attracted to the infinite possibilities of AI technology to the final development of "AI Visual Intelligent Inspection System", the pure love of the technological innovation has always supported us to overcome algorithm optimization in numerous nights.
The project originated from the tutors’ guidance and the team's continuous concern of building safety. When the traditional manual inspection was found with efficiency bottlenecks, the team immediately strived to make technological breakthrough. By means of basic data set affirmation, repeated model verification and continuous iteration scheme, the inspection efficiency was significantly improved. This result is the firm belief in technological value of the entire team. We specially thank for the full supports and active guidance from the tutors Yi Shenghui, Cheng Junye and Cai Wanqing as well as the teachers from engineering department. We also thank for the rich soil provided by the student affairs department and the school for students' technological innovation. The spirit of pursuit for excellence helps us understand that the true innovation is originated from the continuous exploration for problems and the long-term enthusiasm for technology. We salute to every people keeping fighting in MSU-BIT University. Let's together make the technological dream come true.
