From April 14 to 20, in the Grain Rain period, to celebrate the 16th UN International Chinese Language Day, Chinese Language Center and School Language Committee Office of Shenzhen MSU-BIT University carefully planned many diversified activities including cultural interaction, Grain Rain Ya Ji, and Chinese talent shows themed with “Chinese Language: A Gift Across Time and Space”. These activities fully demonstrated unique characteristics of Chinese language and brought a splendid and unparalleled Chinese cultural feast for all teachers and students in the university.

On April 14, a public cultural interaction activity “Chinese Character Guardian Action” formally started, marking the beginning of this activity. On the cultural wall, Chinese and foreign teachers and students wrote their favorite Chinese characters. Strokes revealed the beauty of Chinese Characters and carried on Chinese culture.

On the afternoon of April 20, Grain Rain Ya Ji opened in the school auditorium and attracted many Chinese and foreign teachers, students and citizens. In the activity, teachers, students and citizens immersed themselves in the Eastern charm and cultural significance of the Grain Rain by guessing Oracle, making intangible cultural heritage lacquer fans, tasting Longjing Spring Tea and appreciating the Guqin.

That evening, a Chinese Talent Show “Grain Rain” themed with “grain rain moistens all things and Chinese connects the five continents” was ceremoniously opened in the school hall, pushing the International Chinese Language Day activities to a climax. Chinese and foreign teachers and students gathered together to enjoy a Chinese language feast. The following people from Shenzhen MSU-BIT University attended the show, including first vice president Ivanchenko Sergei, deputy secretary of the Party Committee and secretary of the Discipline Inspection Commission Chen Chaofeng, assistant to vice president Wan Meina, director of Chinese Language Center Wang Wei, directors of some departments and centers, as well as teacher representatives. Teachers and students from Institute of Asian and African Studies, Moscow State University sent a congratulatory message for International Chinese Language Day.

There were many highlights in this show. Nearly 90 international students from various departments and centers across the school performed 25 wonderful programs, ranking the maximum programs in the history. The program types were diverse, including songs, dances, dubbing, recitation and calligraphy. As the first program, the dance “Summer in a Small Town” instantly enlivened the atmosphere of the entire show.

As for language programs, students recited with deep affection the works of modern and contemporary masters such as “You Are the Most Beautiful Encounter in My Life,” “Young Forever”, “Race Against Time” and “Flowers in the Countryside” and brilliantly performed ancient Chinese poems and verses such as “Encouraging Learning”, “Invitation to Wine”, etc., vividly demonstrating the profound understanding of international students about excellent Chinese literary works.

Song programs were also very exciting. In a chorus “Ode to Joy”, students in cow clothing interacted enthusiastically with the audience to deliver happiness. In a sing and dance program “Change Oneself”, the whole class danced together, showcasing their youthful vitality. Furthermore, students brought classic guitar songs “Friends”, “The Girl Next Door”, “The Meaning of Travel”, and so on, bringing up happy memories of the audience. The vocal solo “My Dream” stunned the audience with standard pronunciation and pleasant singing voice, pushing the atmosphere of the entire show to a climax.

Besides, international students also actively explored innovative programs. They merged a chorus “Farewell” into dubbing “Memories of Peking: South Side Stories”, showing the old Beijing style a hundred years ago. A calligraphy demonstration “One Chinese Character for One World” was combined with a speech. A student wrote four Chinese Characters “和而不同” (meaning: harmony in diversity) and shared the deep implication of “harmony” to the audience. The recitation and the dance of “You are the Spring of the World” were inseparably interconnected, creating a unique style.

It is worth mentioning that most of the performers in this show were 2024 first-year international freshmen. Their Chinese proficiency significantly improved in nearly one year. Besides, some senior international students demonstrated their increasingly improved Chinese proficiency and stage style in experiences in many previous activities.
This year, students from Institute of Asian and African Studies, Moscow State University kept their tradition and actively participated in this show. KOMAROVA ELIZAVETA and DIKOVA DARYA performed a poem “Hard Roads in Shu” and a dance “Dance with Mei Flowers” by videos. KOMAROVA ELIZAVETA’s standard and fluent Chinese expression and DIKOVA DARYA’s professional and graceful dance won the admiration of the audience.

For the first time, these programs were divided into two categories in voting: language and song & dance. With expert review and audience voting in limited time, “Encouraging Learning” performed by BURDYGANOV PETR in 2023 Chinese Language Major won first prize in language category; “You are the Spring of the World” performed by SHILOVA ERIKA, TRISHUNKINA VALERIIA, VESELOVA KRISTINA, ORAV VALERIIA and IUN I RE in 2024 Chinese Language Major won first prize in song & dance category.

Speak Chinese in the Grain Rain period and seek bosom friends in five continents. 2025 International Chinese Language Day activities came to an end with taking a group photo of guests, teachers and students. In this cultural exchange event across time and space, Chinese and foreign teachers and students jointly enjoyed the charm of Chinese language and culture, enhancing the dialogue and integration of Chinese and foreign civilizations. In the future, our Chinese Language Center will carefully plan more quality cultural activities and build many language and cultural exchange platforms for international students, so that international students can sense the beauty of Chinese language, appreciate the profoundness of Chinese culture and inherit the pulse of Chinese civilization.
